Adventures in London

A mostly pictorial story.

I decided to scrap my original blog plans of having a pre-written automatic update today, and thought I’d instead post a few pictures of my adventures with my friend C. in London. We came down by bus Friday afternoon to stay with one of her friends, and then yesterday we went out on the town.

First we went to the British Museum, because of course I had to see their Egyptian collection. Unfortunately, the mummy rooms were the most popular room in the whole museum, so getting a good or prolonged look at most of the funerary equipage was a bit difficult. Still, we saw several beautiful pieces, including…

I had a major geek-out moment when we moved farther into the Classical rooms and I realized (because I’d forgotten) that the Parthenon Statuary was kept in the British Museum. Seeing statues and freezes which I had studied extensively during my undergrad was ridiculously exciting for me.

After the Museum, we decided to walk to Covent Garden. We got more than a bit lost, but along the way we saw some interesting folks, such as…

Finally we returned to C.’s friend’s house to rest, eat, and get dressed up for the Steampunk Sizzler which we had come down to attend. It was a lot of fun, and we enjoyed ourselves, despite the fact that we didn’t know anyone else (a lot of folks in the “Scene” knew each other already) and we were both considerably younger than most of the other attendees. They also had several steampunk bands, which was fun, including Ghostfire who sort of began the genre.

And that was day one of the grand London adventure! Today promises to be rather quieter, and tomorrow we return to the north, and I throw myself feverishly into the Dissertation again.
