Some news, not necessarily writing related.

In some ways, this has been a very melancholy weekend. I’ve spent it saying goodbye to my friends here in the UK, and winding myself up into my usual “pre-travel hysteria” which I find necessary for all journeys longer than a day trip. However, the weekend has also had a lot of good points. For one thing, I turned in my dissertation on Friday. And yes, it was like a huge weight lifted off of my chest. The fact that it was immediately replaced by the equally crushing weight of worrying that I’d forgotten something, or misprinted something, or that the graders would hate my research is totally irrelevant.

Hey look! A real blog post! Pretend it’s Sunday still…

That’s right, you heard right, I’m D-O-N-E DONE with my dissertation! Sort of. I have completed the writing there-of, but I still have to go over it with with a fine-tooth comb and incorporate any feedback I get from my advisors. I also need to write an abstract, a bibliography, a table of contents, and possibly add an appendix of source texts. All of that needs to be done and printed out nicely by Friday. No problem, right?

Then it’ll be time to pack up the house and fly back to the States. In less than two weeks time I’ll be standing on my native heath again for the first time in a year. I’m so excited I can barely stand it. Meanwhile, I need to fit some fiction writing in around the edges. My poor muse has been straining at the bonds imposed by exclusive non-fiction writing! It even popped out a song of all things, probably from sheer creative frustration. I plan to reward my muse’s patience by finishing TBG finally. Perhaps by the time I actually get to hug my husband again I’ll also be able to show him a completed manuscript. A worthy goal, I think.

A mostly pictorial story.

I decided to scrap my original blog plans of having a pre-written automatic update today, and thought I’d instead post a few pictures of my adventures with my friend C. in London. We came down by bus Friday afternoon to stay with one of her friends, and then yesterday we went out on the town.

First we went to the British Museum, because of course I had to see their Egyptian collection. Unfortunately, the mummy rooms were the most popular room in the whole museum, so getting a good or prolonged look at most of the funerary equipage was a bit difficult. You may have noticed there was no new post yesterday. For that I apologize. As the title suggests, I’m docking my cookies as punishment. I have no particular excuse for not posting yesterday. I’m afraid I’m just a slacker. However, I promise, new posts with actual interesting content will appear soon in this space. I have a new book to gush about, and also a follow up post about my previous Gender discussion.
