Another erotica novel.
This week has been full of good news, both about writing and other parts of life. One of the pieces of good news is that the amazing Scarlett sold her second book, which I beta’ed for her. This one features my favorite character she’s ever written, so I’ve been almost as eagerly awaiting its sale as she has. In honor of this happy occasion, I thought I’d talk a bit about her first book today, Long Time Coming.

Long Time Coming is, of course, an erotic romance. It follows the adventures of a certain Piper Holt, a particularly fiesty lady who rids herself of an annoying creep of a boyfriend. She soon falls in with a charming Irish-man named Leo Carson. And here we come to the biggest reason I loved this book so much. Scarlett writes the most amazingly fun and flirty men. With Leo she added the extra attraction of a sexy Irish accent. He is a direct sort of guy, with a thoroughly filthy mind that he’s not afraid to share with Piper (and the reader) which just makes him that much more endearing.
Leo isn’t the only reason to love LTC, of course. Piper is completely relatable, even when you want to smack her for doing something completely idiotic. The story has compelling twists (which I’m trying not to ruin here) to the standard “boy meets girl, difficulties ensue” romance novel format. And of course there’s all the little bits of plot there for amusement-factor, such as the foul-mouthed bird owned by Leo. I really enjoy the whole style of the book, which remains mostly bantering even when serious business is afoot. And of course the sex is universally HOT.
On a more serious note, Scarlett handles several subjects near and dear to my heart in a nuanced and realistic manner, specifically threats of domestic abuse and sexual harassment by strangers. Both are themes often overlooked or handled badly by romance authors, but Scarlett realizes that they are both a part of life for many women around the world, and by including them in Piper’s experience in the thoughtful manner she does, she really brings the character to life as a well-rounded and sympathetic surrogate for all the readers who want to tumble Leo. Which is all of them, because Leo Carson is just that awesome.
